Itinerary

Introduction

On this trip, you will hike via the Marangu Route with one night at Mandara Hut and towards Horombo Hut before returning to Mandara for lunch and then hiking back. You will not reach the summit. All short treks are offered on a private basis, and you can start on any day of the year. The short treks are geared for people who like to hike but reaching the summit isn’t a “must do”, and allow one to experience the excitement of hiking on the highest peak on the African continent.

After breakfast, you will be picked up from the hotel in Moshi. You’ll leave Moshi town at 8:30 AM and drive about 45 minutes to Marangu Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro. You’ll do the necessary paperwork at the park gate, such as registrations. Begin hiking at about 9:30 AM.

You’ll hike through the rainforest from the park gate (6000 ft) to Mandara Hut (9000 ft), taking about 3 – 4 hours. You’ll stop halfway for lunch. You’ll reach Mandara Huts at about 01:00 pm. After a short tour at Mandara, you will have to go to the Hut for an evening meal and an overnight stay.

See the surroundings as well as the views of Kenya and Northern Tanzania

Today, you can choose to continue your ascent to the Horombo Huts at 3700 meters (only recommended for experienced hikers) or stay at the Mandara Huts to relax and prepare for the descent. Continuing to Horombo means getting up early to go up, enjoying incredible views, and going back to reach Mandara by lunchtime. After lunch, you’ll start your way back to the starting point to finish this wonderful activity. On the way back, a side trip to Maundi Crater (about 15 minutes away) is a good way to see the surroundings as well as views of Kenya and Northern Tanzania.

The path up the mountain is covered with stones that can easily make you trip, so be sure to wear good shoes. Also, a sweater is recommended, as it can get quite cold at these altitudes. And have your camera ready — you don’t want to leave without taking some pictures of the incredible views. In the afternoon, you’ll be dropped off at a hotel in Moshi.

I had an amazing safari experience with Borbo Safaris. From the very beginning, Rebeca and Emanuel welcomed me like part of their family I really felt safe and comfortable! Emanuel was honest and clear about what to expect during the safari, which I really appreciated. Communication was open and straightforward, making everything easy and clear. During the safari, I saw all of the Big Five and many other incredible animals, surrounded by stunning landscapes. I joined a group safari and spent the days with a lovely group of people. As a solo traveler, it was a great way to meet others. The guide was fantastic, always listening to our interests and making sure we saw as much as possible. He worked hard to give everyone the best experience. In short, it was an unforgettable adventure. I highly recommend Borbo Safaris to anyone who wants a genuine, caring, and amazing safari experience.

I did a 4 day Safari in Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Nationalparks . The tour was very well organized. The driver and guide was nice and explained a lot. The food in the camps was really good. I can highly recommend Safari and Homestay with Rebecca and Emanuel!
